Unintended Consequences of Toy Safety Bill

In today’s San Diego Business Journal, Lorie Zapf talks about the unintended consequences of the CPSIA. Here is the introduction:
Billions of dollars — billions — of perfectly safe toys, clothing, books, bikes, and other children’s products are being taken off store shelves and thrown away, small businesses have been forced to close their doors forever, nonprofits and charities are being hurt, jobs are being lost — all in the name of helping consumers.

This new law has made it illegal to sell many items to kids, including mini bikes and ATV’s. The impact this is having on the motorcyling industry is massive. With one weeks notice, the major manufactures of these mini bikes
(Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, etc.) told the dealers to take the bikes designed for kids 12 years old and under off the sales floor, all web site information, anything to do with kids. The effects are these:
1: Billions, yes billions in lost sales a year. Dealers were weathering this economic mess somewhat okay, as bike sales did not go down as hard as other products. Now, they are going out of business every day, just what we need right now.
2: Parents buying larger, un-effected bikes and ATV’s to skirt the law,
which I do not need to tell you, is downright scary
3: Fact: One out of five PRE-SCHOOL, yes pre-school kids are OBESE! (Yahoo News, April 6th, 2009 )Just what they need….a growing, healthy, active sport gone. Will help video game sales I guess…
4: If you have ever been to a bike race, I do not need to tell you the how many familys race together, spend time together, and grow together, in a great sport.
Do we really need to make that a crime?
5: If junior cannot get a new bike, how many dads will not buy one either?
6: If this law sticks, what is next my fellow Americans? They will find chlorine is bad for kids, make swimming a crime, they will find it will be easier to control us. Not what I call America.
Do something about it! Go to http://www.mic.org and use the democracy we all have enjoyed for over 233 years!
