This is the second in the two-part series from Lizi, an 11 year old affected by CPSIA. Read the first part here.
I was happy to be able to watch the Amend the CPSIA Rally online today. Even though some of the congressmen didn’t quite get it, I’m still glad they chose to be there. I’m also glad the turnout was good.
It was interesting to hear the range of small businesses affected. For example, if they take away child-size motorcycles and ATVs, children will have to ride adult-sized ones, and there will be a lot more injuries. Also, I had never considered used bike dealerships, but Robert Burns said a lot of them are charities. Now, they’re going out of business.
I was particularly interested to learn about lead from a scientific perspective, from Barbara Beck. The amount of lead that can come out of most toys and other products is minute. And, on top of that, lead is in the air, the soil, our food, AND our water! So, not only is the government concerned about controlling something uncontrollable, but they are also concerned about us digesting lead from toys, but not FOOD.
I also agree completely with the little kid on there; “I’m not going to eat my dirt-bike”. I would add that I wouldn’t eat a button, a book, or a zipper. I’m ELEVEN.
It seems everyone involved in a small businesses agrees.
The CPSIA is hurting their businesses.
It’s hurting the economy.
It’s hurting America.
Hopefully congress will take note of the rally today and fix it.

I was glad to see that the Representatives really did get it. They understood that lead and phthalates really are substances that need to be regulated under certain circumstances, especially when very likely to end up in a toddler’s mouth. They also got that the terms of the CPSIA went much farther than that.
I also got positive responses from 2 Representative’s and 1 Senator’s office from my state of Maryland when I visited them in the afternoon!
Good work, Amend the CPSIA!

Completely and utterly ridiculous! Thanks for keeping up with this, Lizi.
Lizi, I really appreciate you bringing the current process of this subject to my attention. You have put the issue in terms clearly understood and practical.
I am all for the safety of children (and adults for that matter), but too many times government makes uneducated decisions that effect us all. In this case it has become a ridiculous way to spend more taxpayer dollars that we really do not have to spare.
I am so glad the next generation representatives, like yourself, are taking time to critically review our system and how it impacts the average U.S. citizen.
Thanks so much,
Miss Sylvia
